What enlargement can and cannot do
Upscaling creates additional pixels between existing ones. Interpolation estimates their colors to avoid blocky nearest-neighbor results. This can produce a smoother larger image, but it cannot recover text, faces or texture that the source never captured.
When enlargement is useful
Moderate enlargement can help fit a layout, prepare a draft print or meet minimum upload dimensions. It is most successful with clean illustrations, moderate scaling and sharp source files.
Start with small steps
Try 125–200% before extreme scaling. Inspect fine text, hair and diagonal edges at 100% zoom. Large jumps amplify blur, noise and compression artifacts.
Prepare the best source
- Use the highest-resolution original available.
- Avoid enlarging a heavily compressed social-media copy.
- Crop only after deciding which pixels the final composition needs.
- Export once to avoid repeated lossy encoding.
For true detail reconstruction, a specialized super-resolution workflow may be appropriate, but it can create plausible detail rather than recover factual information.
