Horizontal and vertical flips explained
A horizontal flip mirrors the image across a vertical axis, exchanging left and right. It is often used to change the direction a subject faces or correct a mirrored selfie. A vertical flip mirrors across a horizontal axis, exchanging top and bottom.
When a mirror transform helps
Designers may flip a subject to create space for copy, balance a layout or align several product photos. A vertical flip can create reflection-style compositions, but it usually looks unnatural for ordinary portraits and landscapes.
Flip versus rotate
A 180-degree rotation turns the image upside down but does not mirror it. Applying both horizontal and vertical flips produces the same visual orientation as a 180-degree rotation. Choose the operation that best describes the intended edit.
