How to reduce image size without unnecessary damage
Compression trades file size for visual detail. A product photo, a screenshot with small text and an archival scan need different settings. Start from the best original rather than repeatedly compressing an exported copy.
Recommended workflow
- Upload the best available source.
- Begin at moderate quality and inspect faces, text, gradients and high-contrast edges.
- Reduce dimensions when the source is larger than its real display size.
- Test the downloaded result in the actual page, document or marketplace.
Settings and file behavior
- Higher quality usually produces a larger file.
- Photos tolerate lossy compression better than text and line art.
- PNG compression is lossless and behaves differently from JPG quality.
- Metadata removal improves privacy without changing visible pixels.
Important limitations
- Already optimized images may shrink only slightly.
- Aggressive settings can create blocks, ringing and color banding.
- Large files can exceed browser memory on mobile devices.
Practical recommendation
Lower quality gradually and stop when artifacts become visible at the real display size. Keep an untouched master because compression should be an export step.
